This was an incident that occurred immediately after the Great Kanto Earthquake on September 1, 1923 ( Taisho 12 ), under the state of martial law, when vigilante groups and members of the general public, motivated by rumors that Korean residents of Japan were rioting, massacred several thousand Koreans in the Kameido area of Tokyo and throughout the country.
