Tatsumaru Incident - Tatsumaru Incident

On February 5, 1908 (Meiji 41), the Japanese cargo ship Daini Tatsumaru was arrested and detained by Qing authorities off the coast of Macau on suspicion of smuggling. The Daini Tatsumaru was transporting firearms and ammunition purchased by the Ataka Trading Company of Hong Kong from the Awaya Trading Company of Osaka to Macau. On February 5, while waiting for the tide off the coast of Macau, the ship found itself in Qing territorial waters, and was detained because it was transferring the firearms and ammunition to a transport ship at that point and was about to unload it for Qing. The Japanese government demanded its immediate release and compensation, claiming that the Daini Tatsumaru had gone through proper customs procedures. Negotiations were concluded on March 15 in favor of the Japanese demands. However, Chinese people were outraged by the incident and began to reject Japanese goods in Canton and Hong Kong, which continued until the end of the year. This was the first full-scale anti-Japanese mass movement.
