A type of cooking utensil used to cook food. It is said to have been called "nahe," meaning "a pot for boiling side dishes," and was written as "pot." In the Nara period, iron ones were already available, and they were called "kananahe" and written as "nabe." The Wamyōshō states that metal ones were called "nabe," and tiles (earthenware) ones were called "pot." As iron pots became more widespread, the word "nabe" came to refer to metal ones, and pots came to be called "earthen pots," but the Zoku Kojidan, written in the early Kamakura period, states that "a clay pot was made from silver."
