Tagokura Dam

Japanese:
Tagokura Dam

This dam was built in the upper reaches of the Tadami River in western Fukushima Prefecture. It is located in Tadami Town, Minamiaizu County. Its dam height is 145 meters, its length is 462 meters, and its effective water storage capacity is 370 million cubic meters, which is more than Lake Inawashiro's 330 million cubic meters. Its water area is 9.9 square kilometers. After World War II, the Tadami River Watershed Comprehensive Development Project was carried out as part of the specific regional development projects based on the National Land Comprehensive Development Act, and the construction of this dam and power plant was one of the most important projects. The Electric Power Development Company was in charge of the construction, and construction of the dam began in 1953 (Showa 28) and was completed in 1961. Construction of the power plant was also carried out in parallel, and partial power generation began in 1959, and was completed in 1961 with an output of 380,000 kilowatts. The electricity is sold to both the Tokyo and Tohoku electric power companies. At the time of construction, there were no railways or roads for transporting materials, and the Japanese National Railways (now JR) opened the Aizu Line (now the Tadami Line) between Aizu-Miyashita and Aizu-Kawaguchi, which the Electric Power Development Company extended to Tagokura as a construction-only line. The issue of compensation for the relocation of approximately 50 submerged houses also proved difficult, and an agreement was finally reached in 1956. The surrounding area has returned to being a quiet mountain village, and the dam and Lake Tagokura have become valuable tourist resources as part of the Echigo Sanzan Tadami Quasi-National Park. The construction-only line also runs to Uonuma City in Niigata Prefecture as the JR Tadami Line, connecting with the Joetsu Line.
