A city in the eastern part of Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1948. It straddles the Osaka Plain and the western foot of the Ikoma Mountains. The central city area was established in the early modern period as a temple town of Daishinji Temple (Yao Gobo), a branch temple of Higashi Honganji Temple, and was reduced to ashes during the Winter and Summer Sieges of Osaka. Throughout the early modern period, it was one of the centers of the Kawachi cotton industry, known as Yao Cotton. There are large factories for metals, chemicals, spinning, etc., and local industries such as brushes and thongs are also thriving. The city is connected by the Kansai Main Line, the Osaka Higashi Line, the Kintetsu Osaka Line, the Osaka Municipal Subway Tanimachi Line, and the Kinki Expressway, and is rapidly developing into residential areas. The Ikoma Mountains are part of the Kongo-Ikoma-Kisen Quasi-National Park. Yao Airport is located in the southern part of the city. Area: 41.72 km2 . Population: 271,460 (2010). 大阪府東部の市。1948年市制。大阪平野と生駒山地西麓にまたがる。中心市街は近世初期に東本願寺別院大信寺(八尾御坊)の寺内町として成立,大坂冬の陣,夏の陣で灰燼に帰した。近世を通じ八尾木綿の名で知られた河内綿業の一中心であった。金属,化学,紡績などの大工場があり,ブラシ,鼻緒などの地場産業も盛ん。関西本線,おおさか東線,近鉄大阪線,大阪市営地下鉄谷町線,近畿自動車道などが通じ宅地化も著しい。生駒山地は金剛生駒紀泉国定公園の一部。南部には八尾空港がある。41.72km2。27万1460人(2010)。
