Concealing color

Japanese: 隠蔽色 - いんぺいしょく

A color or marking of an animal that is confusingly similar to the colors or patterns of its surroundings or background. It has the effect of making it difficult for other animals to notice it, which is thought to enable it to escape the eyes of predators or get closer to prey. It often involves changes in body color in response to the environment. When referring to prey, it is synonymous with protective coloration.

動物の色彩や斑紋の中で，その周囲や背景の色やパターンとまぎらわしいもの。他の動物に気づかれにくいという効果をもち，それによって捕食者の目をのがれたり，餌(えさ)に近寄ったりすることができると考えられる。しばしば環境に応じた体色変化を伴う。被食者についていうときには保護色と同義。
