Also known as acute subglottic laryngitis. This condition is characterized by sudden, severe edema and swelling of the subglottic mucosa, and is most common in children aged 1 to 5 years. It is caused by a viral or bacterial infection, but can also be caused by allergies. The patient develops a dog-like howling cough at night, wheezing, and difficulty breathing, and in severe cases may develop cyanosis and convulsions. Similar symptoms also appear in diphtheria, so to distinguish it from this, it is called pseudocroup. Treatment involves inhalation of adrenaline and sodium bicarbonate saline, administration of antibiotics, and sometimes endotracheal intubation or tracheotomy.

急性声門下喉頭炎とも。声門下粘膜が急に強い浮腫や腫脹をきたしたもので，１〜５歳の幼児に起こることが多い。ウイルスや細菌の感染によって起こるが，アレルギーが原因となることもある。夜間イヌの遠吠え様の咳が出て，喘鳴，呼吸困難をきたし，重症になるとチアノーゼや痙攣(けいれん)を伴うこともある。ジフテリアのときも同様の症状が現れるため，これと区別するために仮性クループとよぶ。治療はアドレナリンと重曹食塩水の吸入，抗生物質投与のほか，ときに気管内挿管や気管切開が必要。
