1425‐74 King of Castile. Reigned 1454-74. Nicknamed the Incompetent. In the midst of the turmoil of the late Middle Ages, he was unable to effectively deal with the challenges of ambitious nobles and the neighboring King of Aragon due to his indecisive nature. He repeatedly made unnecessary compromises, which led to the loss and weakening of his royal authority, and the internal chaos reached its peak. In particular, he recognized the right of succession to the throne of Alfonso, the half-brother of the king, who was recommended by his opponents, instead of his own daughter Juana, and then to her sister Isabel after the prince's death (1468). This led to the country being divided into Juana supporters and Isabel supporters over the succession of Henry, and the country was plunged into a state of civil war involving foreign countries, with Portugal and Aragon allied with each other.
