Eidaka

Japanese:
Eidaka
Also called Eizo and Eibetsu, this refers to the amount of tax collected expressed in the value of the Yongle coin. Taxes were widely paid in cash from the end of the Kamakura period, but in the Muromachi period, imported Yongle coins from the Ming Dynasty began to circulate as high-quality copper coins, and Yongle coins became the standard for expressing tax payments. The Kanko system, which was favored by feudal lords in the Sengoku period, also expressed the amount of tax collected in Eizo. For example, the value of the Yongle coin was set at twice that of the Sei coin, and all transfers of land to fiefs were based on this system. Eizo was especially prevalent in the Kanto region, and was the precursor to the Kokudaka system that was established after the Taiko survey of land, but it disappeared after the use of the Yongle coin was banned in 1608. However, it was used in some places in conjunction with the Bitan coin as a unit of monetary calculation, and in particular, 1 Ei kanmon was used to express the amount of tax collected in cash for Tenryo, with 4 Bitan kanmon being used instead of 1 Bitan kanmon. The names also remain such as Kuchinaga, Kawanaga, and Yamanaga.
