Giuseppe Fieschi

Giuseppe Fieschi
1790‐1836
He was the mastermind behind the attempted assassination of King Louis Philippe of France (1835). Born in Corsica, he served as a soldier in the Neapolitan army, but was charged with fraud and theft and fled to Paris in 1830. Around 1834, he came into contact with underground republicans, and under their influence, he plotted to assassinate the king. He constructed a device that would simultaneously fire 24 guns, and on July 28, 1835, he opened fire on Louis Philippe and his party as they were heading to a military parade on Bastille Day. Dozens were killed and injured, but the king himself escaped unscathed. This incident led to the expansion of the felony courts and the strengthening of the censorship of newspapers and other media (the September Laws). This repression, which followed the Societies Law of the previous year, forced the republican movement to shift to a focus on secret societies.
