The Legend of Camisard

In 1904, the rebellion fell victim to a plot by Marshal Villard, who had been sent as the supreme commander, and Cavalier went into exile. Rolland was killed in battle, and the rebellion finally surrendered in October of the same year. This rebellion has been passed down for a long time as a counterattack against the absolute monarchy's oppressive policy of standardizing ideas and beliefs, and has left behind a tradition that could be called the "Camisard legend." In 1911, the "Musée du Désert" (Museum of the Desert) was established in Rolland's birthplace in Mas-Souvéran, and is dedicated to commemorating the Camisard Rebellion.
