A 12th-century French author and historian. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Touraine. Around 1165-70, he achieved great success with his long verse work, Roman de Troie, which belongs to the genre of so-called imitation tales of antiquity. It tells the story of the adventures of the Argo ship (the legend of the Argonauts) in search of the Golden Fleece, the siege and fall of the city of Troy, and the death of Odysseus, in over 30,000 eight-syllable lines. The main sources were Latin works attributed to Dares the Phrygian and Dictys the Cretan, but Benoist showed particular talent in expanding on love stories, and this work is considered one of the first love stories in French literature.
