1908‐42 Dutch researcher of Indonesian social history. Born in Utrecht, he studied Indian studies at Leiden University and received his doctorate in law in 1934 with his dissertation "Some Observations on Old Asian Trade." He then went to Indonesia, where he published many papers while working in the colonial government's Home Affairs and General Affairs Bureaus. When World War II broke out, he volunteered to join the Marines, and died at the age of 34 when his ship was sunk in a naval battle prior to the Japanese landing on Java. He rejected the Eurocentric view of history that had been dominant in Dutch academia, and demonstrated through thorough research that trade in the seas of Asia and Africa had already made remarkable progress before the advance of European powers.
