1892‐1946 Austrian politician. Born in Moravia. While practicing law in Vienna, he became close to the Nazi movement. He served as Minister of the Interior in the Schuschnik cabinet, then as Prime Minister, and was instrumental in the successful annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany. From 1939 to 1945, he served as minister without portfolio in Hitler's administration. From May 1940 until Germany's surrender, he exercised dictatorial power as chief administrator of the occupied territories of the Netherlands. At the Nuremberg Trials, he was found guilty of the deportation of Dutch people and the persecution of Jews, and was executed as a war criminal.
