The diary of Minamoto no Morotoki (1077-1136), who was a provisional middle counselor and provisional chief minister of the empress's palace. The name "Choshuuki" comes from the Chinese name for the empress's palace, Choshukyu, and is also called "Gondaifu-ki" or "Morotoki-ki" or "Mizu Nikki" (Water Diary) after the radicals of the characters "Minamoto" and "Toki" in his name. It is said that there were originally nearly 70 volumes in the 50 years from 1087 (Kanji 1) to 1136 (Hōen 2), but many volumes are missing, and there are only about 13 volumes from 1111 (Ten'ei 2). Morotoki was well versed in court etiquette and customs, and was also an uncle of Emperor Toba's empress, Bifukumon'in (Tokushi), so he was well versed in the intricacies of the imperial court. For this reason, "Choshuuki" is an indispensable document for learning about politics and court ceremonies, and also contains articles related to Buddhism and social conditions. It is a valuable historical resource for learning about trends during the Insei period. It is collected in two volumes in "Shiryo Taisei."
