1894‐1965
Administrator of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Born in Semarang in central Java, he joined the Dutch East Indies Administration in 1918 and became Director of the Economic Affairs Section in 1936. He was the de facto chief negotiator during the Second Japan-Dutch East Indies Trade War (1940-41), and rejected Japan's heavy-handed demands from the Allied side. He was appointed Lieutenant-Governor in 1941. After Japan occupied the Dutch East Indies, he became Minister of Colonies in the Dutch government in exile in London. In 1944, he became Lieutenant-Governor of the Dutch East Indies Administration in exile, which was established in Brisbane.

オランダ領東インド(現,インドネシア)の行政官。ジャワ中部のスマラン市に生まれ,1918年オランダ領東インド政庁に入り,36年経済局長官となる。第2次日・蘭印会商(1940‐41)では交渉の実質的な最高責任者となり,連合国側の立場から日本の高圧的な要求を退けた。41年副総督に就任。日本によるオランダ領東インド占領後,ロンドンの亡命オランダ政府の植民地相に就く。44年ブリズベーンに成立した亡命オランダ領東インド政庁の副総督となる。
