Strabo (English spelling)

Japanese: ストラボン(英語表記)Strabōn
Strabo (English spelling)
[Born] 63 B.C. Amaseia, Pontus
[Died] c. 21 AD. Ancient Greek geographer and historian from Amaseia, Pontus. In 44 BC he went to Rome to study geography and philosophy as an Aristotelian, but switched to the Stoic school under the influence of Athenodorus, the teacher of Octavian (Augustus). He stayed in Rome until at least 31 BC, continuing Polybius's History of the World and writing the 47-volume Historika hypomnēmata, which describes the history of the Roman Empire up to the time of its establishment. In 29 BC he visited the island of Gyarrus in the Aegean Sea on his way to Corinth, and in 25 or 24 BC he sailed up the Nile to Philae. He then began writing the Geographia (17 volumes), which he seems to have stopped for a while, but resumed in 14 and completed in 23. While "Notes on History" has been largely lost, "Geography" has survived almost completely and defines the purpose and methodology of geography. It provides easy-to-read, if not necessarily scientific, descriptions of Iberia, Gaul, Italy, the Danube River basin, the Black Sea coast, Greece, the Caucasus, Asia Minor, India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean coast of Africa, and Mauretania, including their historical and economic development, myths, customs, and the ecology of flora and fauna.
