This ring resembles the shape of a shrimp or crab holding something, so it is called a chelate ring, from the Greek word chēlē, which means "scissors" or "claws." The ligand is called a chelate ligand, and the compound containing the chelate ring is called a chelate compound. When a tridentate or higher ligand coordinates to form multiple chelate rings, the chelate ring is the same as a bidentate ligand, so it is still called a chelate. …
