Bedford

A commercial and industrial city in central Bedfordshire, southeast England, the United Kingdom. It has a population of 137,000 (1993). Located in the fertile valley of the Great Ouse, it has developed as an agricultural product distribution center and an industrial city focusing on agricultural machinery, electrical machinery, and diesel engines. A garrison existed at the crossing point in Roman times, but the first historical record of the city is as the battlefield where the Saxon Cathwulf defeated the Britons in 571. It later became the county capital when Bedfordshire was founded, and became a self-governing city during the reign of Henry II (1154-89).

イギリス，イングランド南東部，ベドフォードシャー中部にある商工業都市で州都。人口13万7000(1993)。グレート･ウーズ川中流の肥沃な河谷に位置し，農産物集散地として，また農業機械，電気機械，ディーゼルエンジンを中心とする工業都市として発展している。ローマ時代にも渡河点に駐屯地が存在したが，歴史上の最初の記録は，571年にサクソン人カスウルフがブリトン人を破った戦場としてである。そののちベドフォードシャーの創設に際しては州都となり，ヘンリー2世(在位1154‐89)時代に自治都市となった。
