The Story of a Woman Who Loved Women

Japanese:
The Story of a Woman Who Loved Women
A joke book written by Deirōshi. Completed in 1749 (Kan'en 2). Three volumes and three books. The true identity of Deirōshi may have been the Japanese scholar Yamaoka Matsuake. The book consists of two parts: a tale about a nighthawk called Okatsu that exposes the inner workings of Yoshiwara at the time (a parody of the Tao Zhuang chapter of the Zhuangzi), and a treatise on the pleasures of sex called "Setsu" (The Theory of Sex) (a play on the Laozi). The publication of this book was a major stimulus to the Edo literary world thereafter, and the world of joke books dealing with discussions of pleasure quarters and amorous life began to flourish. It is a work of great significance in literary history. [Nakano Mitsutoshi]
