A volcanic island group belonging to the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Located 450 km east of San Cristobal Island, it consists of the four main islands of Ndenude (Endeni), Utupua, Banikoro, and Tinakula, the surrounding reef, and the Taumako (Dafu) islands. It has a total area of about 1,000 km2 and a population of about 4,000. In 1595, the Spaniard Mendaña discovered Ndenude Island and named it Santa Cruz. Since then, there has been little contact with Western countries, until recent years. From 1923 to 1964, kauri pine, which is used for canoe timber, was developed mainly on Banikoro Island, but since then copra has become an important product.
