A former town in Koka County in southern Shiga Prefecture. It occupies the middle reaches of the Yasu River. Its center is Minakuchi, a post town on the Tokaido road that developed as a castle town and is the commercial center of the county. The Kibukawa River in the south runs through the Kusatsu Line and is the junction of the Shigaraki Kogen Railway and the Omi Railway. The town produces a lot of tea and is a specialty of Koka County, with kanpyo (dried gourd) as its specialty. In October 2004, it merged with the towns of Tsuchiyama, Koka, Konan, and Shigaraki in Koka County to form Koka City. 68.93 km2 .
