1596‐1656 Dutch landscape painter. Born in Leiden, he studied painting there and in Hoorn before moving to Haarlem to study under E. van de Velde. After working in his hometown, he moved to The Hague in 1631, where he died. His early works, which depict villages and winter scenes, are strongly influenced by his teacher, but from the late 1620s he began to paint riverside and sand dune landscapes in subdued tones, excluding natural colors, and established the so-called "tonal style." This tendency became even stronger from the late 1630s to the 1640s, when all scenes were expressed using only shades of light brown or light green.
