Three small islands in the Pacific Ocean, 650 km west of the port of Valparaiso, in central Chile. Territory of Chile. Total area 180 km2. The main island, Robinson Crusoe Island (Mas a Tierra), is 93 km2 and has a population of 520 (1980). The second, Alejandro Selkirk Island (Mas Aferra), is 83 km2. Fishing is the main industry, with shrimp as an export. They were discovered by the Spaniard Juan Fernández in 1563.
