1874‐1933 Dutch legal scholar and founder of Indonesian customary law research. Born in Dordrecht, he studied at Leiden University, receiving his doctorate in law in 1898 with a dissertation entitled "The Overview and Content of International Law." In 1901, he became a professor at Leiden University, where he devoted himself to the research and teaching of Indonesian customary law and international law. The legal phenomenon known as adat, which occurs throughout Indonesia, had already attracted the attention of researchers, but it was his achievement to elevate it to the level of academic study. In 1918, he completed the first volume of his magnum opus, "The Customary Law of the Dutch East Indies," which prompted a reexamination of the tendency to unify and westernize the legal system that had been promoted by the Dutch colonial government.
