Cornelis van Vollenhoven

1874‐1933
Dutch legal scholar and founder of Indonesian customary law research. Born in Dordrecht, he studied at Leiden University, receiving his doctorate in law in 1898 with a dissertation entitled "The Overview and Content of International Law." In 1901, he became a professor at Leiden University, where he devoted himself to the research and teaching of Indonesian customary law and international law. The legal phenomenon known as adat, which occurs throughout Indonesia, had already attracted the attention of researchers, but it was his achievement to elevate it to the level of academic study. In 1918, he completed the first volume of his magnum opus, "The Customary Law of the Dutch East Indies," which prompted a reexamination of the tendency to unify and westernize the legal system that had been promoted by the Dutch colonial government.

オランダの法学者でインドネシア慣習法研究の創始者。ドルドレヒトに生まれ，ライデン大学に学び，1898年に〈国際法の概観と内容〉という学位論文で法学博士号を得た。1901年にライデン大学教授に迎えられ，インドネシア慣習法と国際法の研究･教育に専念した。アダットと呼ばれるインドネシア各地の法現象はそれまでにも研究者の注目を浴びていたが，これを学問にまで高めたのは彼の業績である。18年に大著《オランダ領東インドの慣習法》の第1巻が完成し，それまでオランダ植民地政庁が推進して来た法体系の一本化･西欧化の傾向の再検討を促した。
