The Volga is the longest tributary on the left bank of the Volga River, flowing through the eastern part of European Russia in the Russian Federation. It is 1,805 km long and has a drainage area of 507,000 km2 . It originates in the Ural Mountains, collects many tributaries, flows southwest, and joins the Volga at the Kuibyshev Reservoir (an artificial lake of 6,450 km2 ). There are hydroelectric power stations at Kama, Botkin, and Nizhnekamsk, and the river is navigable for about 1,500 km except during the winter freezing season (December to April). There are regular shipping routes from Perm to Astrakhan, Nizhny Novgorod, and Moscow, and the coast is known for its beautiful scenery.
