Rogier van der Weyden

Rogier van der Weyden
1399 or 1400-64
Flemish painter. Born in Tournai, died in Brussels. Along with Jan van Eyck, he was a master of Flemish painting in the first half of the 15th century. In contrast to Jan's clear realism, his style, characterized by a profound composition reminiscent of a group of wooden figures and the expression of honest emotions such as tears, had a greater influence on later Flemish and northern painting in general than Jan's. In May 1427, he entered the workshop of the Tournai painter Campin (probably a painter in Flemalle), and in August 1432 he became his master. By 1436 he was already known as the "city painter" of Brussels.
