Kingdom of the East Goths (Germany)

A Germanic tribal state founded by the Ostrogoths in Italy in the 5th and 6th centuries. In German, it is called Reich der Ostgoten. The Goths, believed to have originated in Scandinavia, were a branch of the East Germanic people that split into two groups, eastern and western, in the 3rd century. The Byzantine Emperor Zeno, troubled by the Ostrogoths' raiding and invading activities in his own territory, such as the Balkans and Asia Minor, encouraged the tribe, led by Theodoric the Great, to invade Italy, where Odoacer was under the rule of the Goths.

5世紀から6世紀に東ゴート族がイタリアを中心に建設したゲルマン部族国家。ドイツ語ではReich der Ostgotenと称する。スカンジナビアを発祥地とされるゴート人は，東ゲルマン人の一派で，3世紀に東西二つの集団に分かれた。バルカン半島や小アジアなどの，自らの領域内での東ゴート族の略奪･侵入行動に悩んだビザンティン皇帝ゼノンは，テオドリック大王の率いるこの部族に，オドアケル支配下のイタリアへの遠征を勧めた。
