Cape Noshappu

A cape in Wakkanai City, at the northern tip of Hokkaido. It faces Cape Soya across Soya Bay. It is made up of the Wakkanai Formation, which is composed of hard shale and mudstone from the Miocene Tertiary Period, and has three clearly defined coastal terraces, with a continuous sea-eroded platform less than three meters above sea level. Below sea level, a wave-cut platform four meters deep extends 500 meters offshore, forming a rocky beach. At the tip, there is a 42.7-meter-tall lighthouse, as well as the Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium and the Youth Science Museum, and on the terrace behind it is a radar station for the Self-Defense Forces.

北海道北端部、稚内市(わっかないし)にある岬。宗谷湾(そうやわん)を隔てて宗谷岬と相対している。第三紀中新統の硬質頁(けつ)岩、泥岩などで構成される稚内層からなり、三段の明瞭(めいりょう)な海岸段丘が発達し、標高3メートル以下の海食台が続いている。海面下には水深4メートルの波食棚が沖合い500メートルまで広がって磯(いそ)浜となっている。先端部に高さ42.7メートルの灯台のほか、ノシャップ寒流水族館と青少年科学館があり、背後の段丘上に自衛隊のレーダー基地がある。
