…The introduction of Western clothing began at the end of the Edo period (1850s-60s), and initially, second-hand clothes purchased from foreign ships were remodeled for military uniforms. In 1870, after the Meiji Restoration, uniforms for the army and navy were decided, and one-item craftsmen called "imported goods stores" made uniforms for high-ranking government officials, while "several-item craftsmen" made uniforms for general government officials (police, postal, railway, etc.). Eventually, Western-style craftsmen who called themselves "imported tailors" appeared, and in 1872, the Imperial Household Uniform Regulations were changed to Western-style grand and ordinary formal wear, and orders gradually increased, and by 1881, craftsmen specializing in women's clothing, known as "female Chinese clothing stores," also appeared. …

…洋装の導入は幕末(1850‐60年代)に始まり，当初は外国船から買った中古服を軍用服などに改造していた。維新後の1870年に陸海軍の制服がきまり，〈舶来屋〉と呼ばれる一ツ物師（ひとつものし）が高級官吏の御用服を，数物師（かずものし）が一般官吏の制服(警察，郵便，鉄道など)を注文縫製した。やがて技術を習得した舶来仕立職と名乗る洋服職人があらわれ，1872年皇室服制が洋装の大礼服，通常礼服に定められたことからしだいに受注が増加し，81年には女唐服屋（めとうふくや）といわれた婦人服専門の職人も登場している。…
