1847‐96 A leader of the anti-Buddhist movement in Vietnam in the 19th century. Born in Ha Tinh Province in central Vietnam. In 1877 he passed the civil service examination and served in the Hue Imperial Court, but in 1883 he was dismissed from office due to his involvement in the issue of succession to Emperor Tu Duc and retired to his hometown. In 1885 he received an imperial decree from Emperor Ham Nghi to be loyal to the emperor, and rallied the Van Thanh (literati) of Ha Tinh Province. He established his headquarters in Phuong Khe and waged a guerrilla war in the mountainous region of the northern half of central Vietnam.
