The first Protestant church in Japan was founded in 1872 in Yamashita-cho, Yokohama by students of the Bara School. With J. Bara as interim pastor, Ogawa Yoshitsune as elder, and 11 others including Oshikawa Masayoshi, the church aimed to be purely evangelical and non-denominational. It then spread nationwide to Tokyo, Kobe, Osaka, Hirosaki, Ueda, and Nagasaki, and the church that eventually merged with the Presbyterian Church became known as the United Church of Christ in Japan, and the other three streams included the United Church of Christ in Japan and the Methodist Church in Japan.
