Playboy - Playboy (English spelling)

An American monthly men's magazine. Founded in 1953 by Hugh Marston Hefner (1926-2017), it features healthy "girl-next-door" nude photos and high-quality articles that are a mix of hard and soft. Its role in sexual liberation and its contribution to bringing high quality to nude magazines are significant. Since the 1980s, the magazine's sales have stagnated due to changing times and the proliferation of more explicit similar magazines such as Penthouse , and sales per issue have fallen from a peak of 7.2 million copies in the mid-1970s to 1.57 million copies in 2010, but it remains the top men's magazine. In order to counter a takeover offensive by rival companies, Playboy Enterprises, the publisher, decided in March 2011 under the direction of Hugh Hefner, editor-in-chief and chief creative officer, to buy back all common stock held by third parties and to cease public listing. Since 1975, the Japanese version has been published in partnership with Shueisha, but publication ceased with the January 2009 issue.

アメリカの月刊男性誌。1953年ヒュー・ヘフナーHugh Marston Hefner（1926―2017）が創刊。健康的な「隣の女の子」風のヌード写真と、硬軟取り混ぜた質の高い記事が売り物。性の解放に果たした役割や、ヌード雑誌に質の高さを持ち込んだ功績は大きい。1980年代以降、時代の変化と『ペントハウス』Penthouseをはじめとするより露骨な類似誌の氾濫(はんらん)もあって伸び悩み、号あたりの販売部数は1970年代なかばの720万部をピークに、2010年には157万部にまで落ち込んでいるが、男性誌トップの座に揺るぎはない。発行元のプレイボーイ・エンタープライズ社はライバル社からの買収攻勢に対抗するため、2011年3月にヒュー・ヘフナー編集主幹兼最高クリエイティブ責任者の指揮下、第三者保有の普通株すべてを買い戻し、株式上場をやめる決定を下した。1975年（昭和50）以来日本版が集英社から提携刊行されてきたが、2009年（平成21）1月号を最後に休刊となっている。
