Inner teaching - Naikyoubo

Japanese: 内教坊 - ないきょうぼう

〘 noun 〙 In ancient times, this was a place in the Imperial Court where women were taught female music and toka (traditional Japanese singing) . It served at festivals and private banquets. There were betto (headmaster), azukari (assistants) , dance instructors, and geisha (geisha women) who learned from them. The betto (headmaster) was a person from the Dai or Chunagon who was knowledgeable in music, the azukari was a woman, and the instructors were selected from among the former dancing girls. The date of its establishment is unclear, but there are historical documents that indicate its existence from the latter half of the Nara period. *Shoku Nihongi - Tenpyo Hoji 3rd year (759), January Ototori " _{Two women} composed music on the stage, _and _one performed singing in the garden of the _inner teaching room" [New Book of Tang - Hyakukanshi 3]

〘名〙古代、朝廷で女性に女楽・踏歌(とうか)などを教習させた所。節会・内宴などに奉仕した。別当・預(あずかり)および舞を教える師と、これを習う妓女（舞妓）などがいた。別当は大・中納言の中の音楽に通じた人が、預は女性が、師はもとの舞姫の中から命じられた。設置年代は明らかでないが、奈良時代後半には、その存在を示す史料がある。※続日本紀‐天平宝字三年（759）正月乙酉「作_二女楽於舞台_一、奏_二内教坊蹋歌於庭_一」〔新唐書‐百官志三〕
