Willem I van de Velde (1614-1693) was born in Leiden, Netherlands. He is known for his unique monochrome style (grisaille), which depicts ships in minute detail, painted with pen on chalk-based boards or canvases. In 1673, he moved to England with his son Willem II van de V. (1633-1707), and together they became court painters to Charles II and then James II.Theodor Hendrik van de VeldeDutch gynaecologist and sex researcher. While treating patients who had worries and concerns about their married life and were bound by Victorian sexual morality, he also conducted physiological and psychological research into marriage. His works include the trilogy The Perfect Marriage: A Study of Its Physiology and Technique, Disgust in Married Life, and Pregnancy and its Desirable Effects in Marriage. In particular, The Perfect Marriage, published in 1926, was translated into many languages and widely read. An abridged version was published in Japan in 1930 and banned, but the complete translation (under Van de Velde's name), published in 1946 after Japan's defeat in the war, was well received as an explanation of the importance of married couples' sex life, which had previously been considered taboo, and became the beginning of subsequent sexology books.
