Mozambique Channel - Mozambique Channel (English spelling)
The area in the southwestern Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique on the African continent. It is about 1,600 km from north to south, 950 km wide at its widest point, and 400 km wide at its narrowest point. It is about 3,000 m deep at its deepest point. The warm Mozambique Current flows from north to south. At the northern end are the three islands that make up the Comoros and Mayotte, an overseas department of France. Many ships from Asia, the Middle East, and Europe have passed through this area since ancient times, and it is still a sea route connecting the Arabian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean today. There are major ports such as Nacala, Beira, Porto Amelia, Mozambique, Maputo on the Mozambique side, and Mahajanga and Triari on the Madagascar side. At the end of 1971, the first signs of undersea oil fields were found on the continental shelf of the east coast of Africa south of Suez, and natural gas deposits were also discovered.
