Farnese, Alessandro, Duke of Parma
Born: August 27, 1545 in Rome
[Died] December 3, 1592. Arras. Spanish Governor of the Netherlands (in office 1578-86). Duke of Parma. From the Farnese family. Grandson of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Served under King Philip II of Spain, and won the naval battle of Lepanto under Don Juan de Austria in 1571. In 1578, he was appointed Governor of the Netherlands in Brussels, where he demonstrated his skill in suppressing rebellions, forcing the Catholic cantons of the south to form the League of Arras and make peace with Spain. He also pacified the cities of Flanders and Brabant that were on the side of the rebels, and in 1585 he captured Antwerp (Antwerp), successfully keeping the south (Belgium) under Spanish rule.

[Died] September 10, 1547. Piacenza. First Duke of Parma-Piacenza (reigned 1545-47). From the Farnese family. Son of Pope Paul III. In 1545, Paul III carved out part of the Papal States to create the Duchy of Parma-Piacenza, and appointed him its first Duke, but he incurred the wrath of the nobles and was assassinated.
