Rockweed - Rockweed

A perennial plant of the Verbenaceae family (APG classification: Verbenaceae). It has long stems that crawl on the sand and opposite leaves that are obovate and thick with sawtooth on the upper half. From July to October, the flower stalks grow upright in the leaf axils and produce cylindrical inflorescences that bloom with crimson-purple, lip-shaped flowers. It grows on sand and rocks on the coasts and riverbanks of Honshu from the Kanto region westward, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa, and is distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The Verbenaceae genus has a dichotomous fruit, and there are about 10 species in the world and one species in Japan.

クマツヅラ科（APG分類：クマツヅラ科）の多年草。茎は長く砂上をはい、葉は対生し、倒卵形で厚く、上半部に鋸歯(きょし)がある。7～10月、葉腋(ようえき)に花茎を直立し、円柱状の花穂をつけ紅紫色の唇形花を開く。本州の関東地方以西、四国、九州、沖縄の海岸や川岸の砂や岩上に生え、世界の熱帯から亜熱帯にかけて分布する。イワダレソウ属は果実は2分果からなり、世界に約10種、日本には1種が分布する。
