Japanese: 向野田古墳 - むこうのだこふん

This keyhole-shaped tumulus is located in Matsuyama-machi, Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It was built facing north on a hill extending from the foot of Mt. Karamawari at the base of the Uto Peninsula, and measures 86m in length, 52m in diameter at the rear, and 39m in width at the front. It is equipped with roofing stones, and a type of cylindrical haniwa and jars have been excavated from the mound. In 1969, the Uto City Board of Education led an excavation of the rear. As a result, a burial facility was discovered in which a boat-shaped stone coffin was placed in a pit-type stone chamber made of slabs of stone. Inside the sarcophagus, which has a stone pillow at one end, human bones and grave goods were found to be in extremely good condition as they were at the time.

熊本県宇土市松山町に所在する前方後円墳。宇土半島基部の雁回山麓からのびる丘陵上に北面して築かれ，全長86m，後円部径52m，前方部幅39mを測る。葺石（ふきいし）をそなえ，一種の円筒埴輪や壺が墳丘から出土した。1969年に宇土市教育委員会を中心として後円部を発掘した。その結果，板石積みの竪穴式石室に舟形石棺をおさめた埋葬施設を検出した。一端に石枕を据えた石棺の内部には，人骨，副葬品がきわめてよく往時の状態を保っていた。
