At the end of the war with Rome that his father had started, he attempted a rebellion against his father, leading him to commit suicide (63 BC). Rome recognized him and gave him rule over the Bosporus region. In the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, he sided with the latter, and in 48 BC, with the aim of rebuilding the Kingdom of Pontus, he occupied Colchis, Lesser Armenia (present-day northeastern Turkey to western Armenia), and Cappadocia, and defeated Caesar's lieutenant at Nicopolis.
