She published novels and short stories depicting people tied to the land and tormented by the conflict between tradition and the new social trends in America in the 1920s and 1930s. All of her major works, including So Big (1924), which won the Pulitzer Prize, Show Boat (1926), Cimarron (1930), and Giant (1952), were made into films, with Cimarron winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. Her other works include The Royal Family (1927), a play co-written with G. Kaufman, and Stage Door (1936).
