Haigetsu-tei

Japanese:
Haigetsu-tei

(1) A zaju (miscellaneous opera) from the Yuan Dynasty in China, written by Guan Hanqing. Set against the backdrop of war between the Jin and Mongolian Empires, the daughter of an aristocrat, Wang Ruilan, and the clerk Jiang Shilong are separated due to their different family backgrounds, but Ruilan overcomes her father's opposition and finally marries Shilong, who has passed the exam to become a licensed statesman. The play sings of Ruilan's passion and pure feelings as she seeks a free marriage despite being placed in a feudal environment. The title comes from a scene in the play in which Ruilan and a girl under the protection of the royal family (who is actually Shilong's sister) burn incense in the garden and pray to the new moon for a reunion with Shilong. The official name of the play is "The Pavilion of the Cursed Beauty and the Moon." (2) A Nanqu piece that follows the structure of Guan Hanqing's "Baiyueting" but is revised into a long piece of 40 scenes. The author is unknown. One theory is that it was written by Shi Hui of the Yuan Dynasty. It is a masterpiece of Nanqu, on a par with "Biwaji." The original has already been lost, and the extant text was edited by people of the Ming Dynasty, and the title was changed to "Yukeiji."
