Fabius - Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator

An ancient Roman military man. The Fabius clan was one of the most powerful families throughout the Roman Republic, and he was appointed consul five times. When Hannibal sacked Italy, he became dictator in 217 BC, and was called the "Cunctator" because he avoided a decisive battle and adopted a delaying tactic. In his later years, he wielded great power as the head of the senate, but came into conflict with the young Scipio the Elder.

古代ローマの軍人。ファビウス氏はローマ共和政期を通じてもっとも有力な氏族の一つであったが、彼はコンスル（統領）に5回就任した。ハンニバルがイタリアを劫掠(ごうりゃく)したときには、紀元前217年にディクタトル（独裁官）となり、決戦を避けて遷延戦術をとったので「遷延家」（クンクタトル）と称された。晩年には元老院首席として権勢を振るったが、若い大スキピオと対立した。
