The capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein, a small country in Central Europe. Population 5,043 (1999), 5,668 (estimated for 2019). It spans the valley plain (470 meters above sea level) of the Rhine River, which flows along the border with Switzerland in the west, and the alluvial fan (565 meters above sea level) at the foot of the Drei Schwestern mountain range. It is surrounded by vineyards and orchards, and the Archduke's castle stands out on the mountainside, making it the symbol of the city. Although it is the capital, it has a rural atmosphere. In addition to being the seat of the government, parliament, and courts, the main economic activities are industries such as cotton spinning and machine parts, agriculture, mainly grape cultivation, and tourism. Accommodation facilities are available, but there are many passing tourists. [Ikuo Maejima] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
