A Rakugo performer of the Meiji period. Born into a samurai family in Nobeoka Domain (Miyazaki Prefecture). His real name was Oto Rakusaburo. During the Genji era, he became a disciple of the first Ryutei Enshi and took the name Enka, then fled to Shizuoka for a time, changed his name to Ensei in 1876, and formally returned to the stage in Tokyo under the name Enju in 1889. In 1891, he became Yanagiya Kosan. The first was called "Shunputei", but from the second generation onwards he took the name "Yanagiya". He excelled in humorous tales with his unusual masks suited to Rakugo performers, and was praised on a par with "Hana no Enyu" of the Sanyu school. As he spoke in a high-pitched voice, like a chirping bird, he was given the name Kingoro Kosan after the house name given to him by Matsumoto Jun in 1896, but after passing on the name of Kosan to his disciple in 1903, he took the name Yanagiya Kingoro. <References> "Generations of Kosan" (Rakugo World, No. 32)

明治期の落語家。延岡藩(宮崎県)藩士の家に生まれる。本名大藤楽三郎。元治のころ初代柳亭燕枝に入門して燕花,一時静岡へ出奔,明治9(1876)年燕静と改め,12年燕寿の名で東京の高座に正式に復帰した。16年から柳家小さんとなる。初代は「春風亭」だったが,この2代目から「柳家」を名乗った。噺家向きの珍面で滑稽噺に優れ,三遊派の「鼻の円遊」と並び称された。高調子で鳥のさえずるように喋るところから,21年松本順に贈られた楼号により,禽語楼小さんと称したが,28年に小さんの名を弟子に譲ったのちは柳家禽語楼と名乗った。<参考文献>「小さん代々」(『落語界』32号)
