Blois

Japanese: ブロア(英語表記)Blois
Blois
The capital of the Loir-et-Cher department in central France. It is located on the right bank of the middle Loire River, about 56 km southwest of Orléans. It first appeared in records in the 6th century, and in the early Middle Ages it became the territory of the Counts of Blois, ancestors of the future Capetian royal family. At the end of the 14th century, it was acquired by Louis, Duke of Orléans. In 1429, Joan of Arc led her troops from here to capture Orléans. In 1498, the grandson of Louis, Duke of Orléans, became King Louis XII, and the city flourished to the point of being called the second capital of France until the end of the 16th century. The castle, built in the 13th century, is where Duke Henri de Guise was assassinated by order of Henry III at the Three Estates General convened in 1588. It was repeatedly enlarged until the 16th century, giving it the beauty and grandeur befitting a royal residence. The city also has many old buildings from the Renaissance and other periods, and its beautiful streets make it one of the centers of tourism in the Loire Valley for visiting the ancient castles. It is a distribution center for corn, asparagus, wine, etc., and is home to industries such as chocolate, shoes, clothing, tapestry, and machinery. Population 50,549 (1990).
