al-Fayyūm

Japanese: ファイユーム（英語表記）al-Fayyūm

The capital of the governorate of the same name in central Egypt. It is located 90 km south-southwest of Cairo, halfway between the Nile and Lake Qarun. It is an isolated city in the southeastern part of a depression in the Gharbiya Desert, with a long history dating back to the Neolithic period. It is a distribution center for goods in the governorate and the Nile Valley. Industries of cotton ginning, cotton and wool spinning, dyeing, leather tanning, and tobacco are based here. It is connected to the Cairo-Aswan main railway by a railway branch and road, and is also the railway center of the governorate. Population: 227,300 (1986 estimate).
