An annual grass of the grass family cultivated for its stems and leaves as feed or for extracting sweet juice from the stems. It is considered to be a variety of sorghum. Sorghum cultivated for feed is classified into three types: grain sorghum, dual-purpose sorghum, and sorghum-type sorghum. Among these, sorghum-type sorghum has a height of 2.4m or more, a thick stem, and is juicy with sweet juice, and there are many mid- to late-ripening varieties. Originally, sorghum was the name given to a variety of this group that had a particularly high sugar content and was differentiated to be used for making molasses and syrup. In Japan, it is called sweet sorghum or rozoku (reed millet), and in America, it is often called sweet sorghum. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
