A disorder in which people avoid situations where they are directly or indirectly evaluated by others, such as speaking in front of others, writing, eating, conversing, and taking exams. People are prone to fall into situations where they are concerned about how they are perceived, especially when they are in the company of people they only know halfway. Symptoms include intense tension, stage fright, self-consciousness, heart palpitations, trembling and sweating. The more you worry about your symptoms, the more likely it is to occur. It is most common during adolescence, when people begin to look at themselves from within, and during young adulthood, when communication becomes more diverse. People with social phobia have difficulty interacting with others, have very few friends, and some even drop out of school or quit their jobs. On the other hand, it can also occur in people who are considered "good" by their parents and teachers and are sensitive to failure and shame. In some cases, social phobia can cause a decrease in self-esteem, leading to depression or alcoholism. Effective treatments include behavioral therapy and Morita therapy. → Phobia/Erythrophobia

人前で話す，文字を書く，食事をする，会話をする，試験を受けるなど，人から直接的・間接的に評価される状況を恐れて，避ける病気のこと。自分がどう見られているのかが気になる場面や，特に中途半端に顔見知りの人たちと同席する場で陥りやすい。　激しい緊張，あがり，自意識過剰，心臓がドキドキする，全身が震えたり汗をかく，といった症状がある。自分の症状を気にすればするほど起こりやすくなる。　自分の内面を見つめはじめる思春期や，コミュニケーションが多様になる青年期に多発する。対人恐怖症になると他人との交流がうまくできず，ごく限られた友人しか持てなかったり，なかには学校を中退したり，仕事を辞める人もいる。一方では，親や教師にとっての〈よい子〉で，失敗や恥辱(ちじょく)に敏感な性格の人にもみられる。対人恐怖症から自尊心が低下して，鬱(うつ)状態になったり，アルコール依存症になるケースもある。　治療は，行動療法，森田療法などが効果がある。→恐怖症／赤面恐怖症
