Intermezzo - Intermezzo (English spelling) Italian

The name of a type of song. The content varies depending on the era.

(1) Intermission music, which was mainly popular in the 16th century. It was performed between the acts of a comedy or tragedy to change the mood of the audience, and often featured sung and performed pastoral or mythological stories. It began in Italy at the end of the 15th century and continued into the 17th century. The two most famous performances were in Florence in 1539 and 1589. It is also called intermedio.

(2) A musical comedy performed between the acts of Italian opera seria in the 18th century. In contrast to serious opera, it has a humorous character and became independent as opera buffa in the first half of the 18th century, triggered by Pergolesi's La madame de la maitre d' (1733). In France, it developed independently as intermedes (a ballet-based work with music), and in Spain, the intermezzo gave birth to tornadillas (small-scale comic operas rich in satire depicting the lives of ordinary people).

(3) A short, inserted movement in 19th-century instrumental music. It is also the name of a short, lyrical piece of instrumental music given to piano pieces, such as those by Brahms.
